What Is A Chamber of Commerce and Why Should You Care?
October 20, 2020
Did you know that the third Wednesday of October is 'Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce' day?
Neither did we! That's why we are bringing you everything you need to know in this latest publication of our 'Epic' blog!
Like Saskatoon, most cities have a local Chamber of Commerce, which are primarily focused on strengthening the local business sector within their respective city. How this is done can vary from location to location, as well as country to country, but it often includes offering services such as affordable employee benefits for small businesses, networking opportunities, advocating on behalf of their members to municipal, provincial, and federal governments, and most importantly, encouraging people who live in the community to support local businesses.
Chambers also often provide a lunch and learn or other educational opportunities to their members as a way of bringing in new ideas and ways of doing things, as well as affordable educational opportunities for small business owners who may not have access to the funds needed to invest in those opportunities elsewhere. Making business education and development opportunities both accessible and available in turn helps enhance local businesses!
For example, the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce has put together a free tutorial for small businesses to access Federal COVID-19 support funding and is also hosting a free session on keeping your business safe from cyber-attacks and data loss.
The benefits of a Chamber of Commerce are...
According to Forbes, the benefits of supporting locally owned businesses are plentiful. These benefits include everything from the creation of more jobs, profits remaining within the community, increased positive relationships with community members, and can even cause an increase in the value of the local real estate (woohoo!).
Epic Alliance Inc. is a member of the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, which means we can be found on their online directory, along with all other members of the SCC. Why is that great? Well, it allows residents of YXE and the surrounding area to have access to an easy way to find out what services are available in their community and to support local businesses! By having an online directory that lists all participating member firms, residents have access to explore local businesses and services they may not have known were available to them.
Why should you care?
Research has shown that, on average, $73 out of every $100 spent at a local business stays within the community, whether it's through taxes, payroll, community donations or sponsorships, and other avenues. For non-local businesses, that number drops to $43 out of every $100 staying in the community. By helping businesses access educational resources and giving a platform to small business owners to share their successes and express their needs, Chambers of Commerce can help create stronger businesses within our communities, which can create a more thriving community for us all!
How can we support our local Chambers?
Although things are a bit different these days (obvious reasons!), you can still support your local Chambers and the businesses that they support! If you're local to YXE, you can start by following the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce on social media to see what they're up to and you can peruse the businesses in their directory - maybe you might find a new interior decorator, dentist office, promotional products firm, or even an autobody shop for those car repairs that you just haven't gotten around to yet.
The first recorded Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1599 in Marseille, France. The Halifax Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1750, is the first recorded English-speaking, North American based chapter!
